Health Action International (HAI) was yesterday announced as a member of the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Network Stakeholder Pool. The Pool has been established to facilitate contributions by a wide range of stakeholders to policy development related to HTAs in the European Union (EU).
We look forward to actively participating in future discussions and to supporting initiatives that strengthen the role of HTAs as a promoter of innovation, that is both meaningful for patients and society as a whole.
Health Action International recently submitted a detailed response to the European Commission’s public consultation on strengthening EU cooperation on HTA. In it, we highlighted the need to ensure that collaboration promotes high procedural and methodological standards.
Specifically, we emphasised that:
High standards for the evaluation of health technologies such as medicines incentivise genuine medical innovation, benefit patients and contribute to the sustainability healthcare systems. On the contrary, poor evaluation standards can lead to the uptake of medicines that offer no or little added therapeutic value. The resolution of differences among EU Member States regarding HTA procedures/methodologies should result in the preservation of high quality standards and the improvement of methods where necessary.
