Health Action International Statement to the 77th World Health Assembly – Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR): Accelerating national and global responses

Thank you chair,

HAI is pleased to address this assembly on an issue as critical as antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and commends the secretariat for having produced such a comprehensive document.

We support inclusion of milestones, references and indicators related to other agendas, processes and institutions as it embodies the necessary cooperation to counter silo-thinking that hinders the effectiveness of public actions and programmes.

The legacy of the COVID-19 pandemic in the form of increased rates of AMR, the lingering difficulties to detect specific pathogens and the decreasing effectiveness of existing antibiotics should push us all to heed the call for better and more effective coordination.

We reaffirm our support for WHO stewardship on global AMR efforts and hope that next United Nations General Assembly will also acknowledge this leading role.
