Health mis– and disinformation has existed for decades, but rapid shifts in media, technology and geopolitics makes it increasingly difficult to contain. At the same time, diminishing trust in healthcare institutions, governments and international bodies reduces the effectiveness of traditional top-down public health communication. As institutional authority becomes less persuasive for many people, there is a growing need for bottom-up approaches that equip trusted authorities within the healthcare system to support citizens in making evidence-based decisions about their health. To date, trust in individual health workers remains rather high in Europe. With this trust, they are well-positioned to facilitate evidence-based decision-making. However, resources and time are limited, and education and training on management of mis- and disinformation is not a regular part of medical training.
Health Action International, as part of a consortium of seven EU partners within the ECHO project, is developing training materials to help equip healthcare workers with skills to be able to curb the spread of mis- and disinformation, and share evidence-based information with patients and citizens. We have developed a survey which explores healthcare workers’ and healthcare trainees’ exposure to misinformation and disinformation, its impact on their work, and their knowledge, skills, and training needs to address it effectively.
The results of this survey will inform the development of a training programme that equips healthcare workers to manage mis- and disinformation with patients/clients and more broadly.
