U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (Democrat, North Dakota) chairs meeting of the Commerce Consumer Affairs Subcommittee to look at the impact direct to consumer marketing of prescription drugs has on the cost of prescription medicines and utilization of those medicines.

HAI Europe criticises European Commission's scheduled announcement on 18 July 2001 to allow "disease awareness" campaigns for specific types of drugs. HAI Europe believes this decision will open the door to direct-to-consumer advertising within the European Union and will have negative impacts on public health.
